Vietnam Itinerary 10 Days: Hanoi, Ninh Binh & Hoi An

This ten-day Vietnam itinerary chooses depth over a north-to-south race: three nights in Hanoi, two in Ninh Binh and four in Hoi An. Arrive in Hanoi and depart from Da Nang. The route includes one domestic flight and two hotel moves, with a full day reserved for the most complicated transfer. Ha Long Bay and Ho Chi Minh City are alternatives to swap in, not extra stops to stack on top.
This is an editorial planning route, not a firsthand trip report, booking or verified output from the app. Counts include arrival and departure. Photographs illustrate the named stops; they do not establish current access or conditions.
Before you rely on this Vietnam itinerary, check it with Amicly
A route, a map and a booking list are useful. They still leave questions about the actual day: was the right place matched, does the journey fit, and what happens to a confirmed visit when the afternoon changes? Amicly's role is to make those checks visible before you build more decisions around the plan.
Paste your itinerary into its checker or create a dated plan, then review place matches, journey timings and flagged issues. Keep unresolved stops visible and confirm important admissions with the provider.

Vietnam itinerary: 10 days and nine hotel nights
Use this route if you want a capital-city stay, limestone scenery and a slower historic-town finish. It leaves southern Vietnam for another trip. The day-six journey goes from Ninh Binh back toward Hanoi airport, then by air to Da Nang and by road to Hoi An. That is one transfer day with several legs, not a short flight followed by a full sightseeing day.
| Day | Main plan | Sleep | Protect this decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive in Hanoi; hotel and nearby meal | Hanoi | Keep the evening free of nonrefundable activities. |
| 2 | Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter | Hanoi | Plan a compact walk, meal and breaks rather than a district checklist. |
| 3 | Temple of Literature; flexible Hanoi afternoon | Hanoi | Check access and opening arrangements before setting the start time. |
| 4 | Road transfer to the Ninh Binh area | Ninh Binh area | Confirm the exact rural hotel address; Hang Mua is optional if time allows. |
| 5 | Trang An boat outing | Ninh Binh area | Confirm the current route, ticket and boarding conditions locally. |
| 6 | Road to HAN → flight to DAD → road to Hoi An | Hoi An | Give the whole day to the transfer and luggage. |
| 7 | Hoi An Ancient Town and Japanese Covered Bridge area | Hoi An | Check which heritage ticket product covers your chosen interiors. |
| 8 | An Bang Beach or an indoor/class alternative | Hoi An | Decide using actual weather and sea conditions. |
| 9 | Hoi An buffer day | Hoi An | Keep room for weather changes, a missed outing or rest. |
| 10 | Hotel → Da Nang airport; depart | — | Reconfirm terminal, pickup and airline check-in requirements. |
Days 1–2: arrive in Hanoi, then walk a manageable city route
On day one, the hotel is the destination. Confirm the address and entrance, how you will reach it and what happens if the flight is late. If you arrive with energy, explore the immediate area and eat nearby. A scheduled food tour belongs on another day unless its timing and cancellation terms genuinely fit the flight.
Day two pairs Hoan Kiem Lake with the Old Quarter. Start with a small walking area, choose a proper lunch break and let the lanes supply the interest. A hotel described as “Old Quarter” may still be awkward for your arrival vehicle or walking needs; ask about the final approach. Check current pedestrian arrangements rather than assuming every street is traffic-free.
Food is part of the outing, not a competition to visit the most stalls. Tell a provider about dietary requirements before paying for a tour. Keep a written version you can show, and confirm ingredients directly when they matter to your decision.

Day 3: Temple of Literature, then leave Hanoi some breathing room
Make the Temple of Literature the main visit. Check its current calendar and the entrance you will use. Keep the afternoon for a café, shopping, another interest or a slower return to the hotel. That open space helps if day two is wet or the group needs rest.
This is a good evening to prepare for the countryside transfer: confirm pickup, the Ninh Binh hotel pin, luggage space and the following airport-transfer arrangement. Administrative details are easier to solve while you still have an unhurried city afternoon.

Days 4–5: Ninh Binh without treating every viewpoint as mandatory
Choose accommodation by the experience you want. A rural stay around Tam Coc or Trang An is a different proposition from a room in Ninh Binh city. Send the driver the exact property, not just the province name. On arrival, settle in before deciding whether the optional Hang Mua viewpoint fits.
Vietnam’s tourism site describes the Hang Mua climb as roughly 500 steps. Treat that as a real physical commitment in heat or wet conditions, rather than an easy photo pause. Travelers who do not want the climb can skip it without losing the core route. The photograph shows the view, not a promise that every visitor should attempt it.
Trang An is the main event on day five. Ask locally about the operating boat routes, boarding arrangements, ticket and likely time on the water. A boat outing is not automatically accessible to every traveler: confirm boarding and assistance needs before committing. Keep the rest of the day loose, with lunch and recovery time rather than a second long excursion.

Day 6: the transfer that deserves its own plan
Do not choose the Hanoi–Da Nang flight by flight time alone. First map the complete chain: hotel checkout, road pickup, airport terminal, airline check-in and bag-drop deadline, flight, baggage collection and onward transport to Hoi An. None of those is included merely because an app displays a short airborne leg.
Build it backward: required airport arrival time minus road journey minus a disruption allowance equals the rural-hotel pickup time. Then ask whether that pickup is practical. A very early flight may make the two-night countryside stay a poor fit. Choose a later flight or explicitly change the preceding night allocation; do not silently add a tenth hotel night.
Keep the Hoi An evening for checking in and dinner nearby. If the flight changes, you should not also lose an attraction ticket. Keep the flight confirmation and both hotel addresses available offline, and agree how the arrival driver will handle a delay.
Days 7–9: Hoi An heritage, a beach option and a spare day
Give the Ancient Town its own day. Start with the heritage sites you actually want to enter, then choose the ticket product that includes them. The official heritage announcement checked for this guide lists a VND120,000 option including the Japanese Bridge or Quan Cong Temple, one museum and three other selected monuments, valid for the stay for up to three days. Product choices and access can change; use the official information and retain the ticket.
The bridge photograph predates later restoration work. It is a place illustration, not a current-condition record. Walk the surrounding area at a pace that leaves time for a meal rather than treating the town as a collection of identical photo stops.
Day eight offers An Bang Beach if conditions suit, or a locally arranged indoor activity or class. Confirm the provider, location and inclusions before paying. Vietnam’s tourism authority identifies September–November as a period of storm and flooding risk around Hoi An; your season matters more than an attractive beach photograph. Day nine remains a buffer so one wet day does not undo the finish of the trip.

Flights, entry readiness and route substitutions
Flight pattern: Hanoi arrival and Da Nang departure avoid a return to the north. If the international ticket requires Hanoi departure, add that return journey to the plan before booking hotels. Removing a sightseeing day does not automatically solve a same-day international connection.
Entry readiness: check your nationality, passport and entry-point requirements with official Vietnamese authorities. The official e-visa service lists visas of up to 90 days, with US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry, and a nonrefundable application fee. Eligibility and permission depend on the application and rules; do not assume every traveler needs, or qualifies for, the same product. Use the official portal and verify the approved details before travel.
| If you want… | Change this route rather than extending each day |
|---|---|
| Ha Long Bay | Replace the two-night Ninh Binh section; compare the cruise schedule and onward transfer before booking. |
| Ho Chi Minh City | Remove another base or give the trip more days. Account for another flight and hotel move. |
| A wholly northern trip | Replace Hoi An with a northern stay and remove the domestic flight; rebuild the final nights. |
| A reverse route | Arrive in Da Nang, finish in Hanoi and recheck the countryside-to-airport chain and attraction calendars. |
A transparent Vietnam budget worksheet
Imagine two adults sharing a room for nine nights at an invented VND1,200,000 per room per night. That is VND10,800,000 together, or VND5,400,000 per person. An illustrative food allowance of VND400,000 per person across ten calendar days adds VND4,000,000. The sample subtotal is VND9,400,000 per person before transport, domestic flights, admission, boats, international flights, entry costs and contingency.
Those room and food inputs are not live quotes or average prices. Replace them with real choices. Price the day-six road–air–road chain as a whole, including checked baggage and airport transfers. Put the Trang An outing and chosen Hoi An ticket on separate lines; an inexpensive hotel does not compensate for an unpriced transfer day.
How Amicly helps you verify this Vietnam plan
Other travel planners already offer capable itineraries, maps, booking tools and collaboration. The reason to consider Amicly here is its verification workflow: review the evidence behind the itinerary, deal with arrival-day constraints and revise free time while preserving confirmed bookings.
| Question before relying on the plan | How Amicly helps | What you still confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Does the day-six journey include every leg? | Review journey timing and schedule flags around the entered flight. | Road pickup, airline deadlines, bags and onward driver. |
| Did the planner find the exact rural hotel? | Inspect place matches and resolve unmatched entries. | Hotel entrance and the pickup instructions agreed with the supplier. |
| Will replanning move a paid flight or hotel? | Mark confirmed items as booked and adjust free sightseeing around them. | Original confirmation, baggage and cancellation terms. |
| Is the country and weather preparation complete? | Use readiness prompts and saved details alongside the route. | Official entry permission, local weather and operator notices. |
A Vietnam planning example—not an app test result: A proposed morning flight from Hanoi looks convenient until the countryside-to-airport road leg is included. Enter the flight and exact hotel, review the timing and decide whether to choose a later service or change a hotel night before paying. A flight time alone cannot verify the whole transfer.

Read the labels, not just the itinerary
Amicly documents place lookups on Google Maps, journey timing with Google Routes and rule-based schedule checks. A place it cannot match stays unverified. Date-dependent checks need your dates; source data can miss special closures. Your own input, a calculated time and an estimate marked “not checked live” mean different things. Read those distinctions before acting.
Mark a confirmed stop “This is booked” before re-planning. Amicly preserves marked booking times while proposing changes to available time. Keep the original confirmation too: the app doesn't buy the ticket or establish cancellation rights.
Prepare for the country as well as the sights
Use Amicly's country guides to review destination apps and official references before travel. The app's full Travel Kit currently covers China and is labeled not yet reviewed; other destinations receive general travel apps. Don't confuse the wider country-guide library with full in-app kit coverage for Vietnam.
Saved trips, kits and your hotel address can be reopened on the same device offline. New AI requests and live services still need connectivity. Use our offline and arrival preparation guide for a separate backup if your phone itself becomes unavailable.

Vietnam itinerary questions
Is ten days enough for Vietnam?
It is enough for this three-base route. Covering north, central and south in the same period needs more travel and fewer unhurried days.
How many nights are included?
Nine: Hanoi three, Ninh Binh area two and Hoi An four. Arrival and departure count within the ten calendar days.
Why omit Ha Long Bay?
The route chooses Ninh Binh for its countryside stay. Replace that section if a bay cruise is your priority; check the cruise and transfer timetable first.
Can I add Sapa?
It requires another substantial journey and nights. Replace an existing section or extend the trip rather than treating it as a spare afternoon.
Should I stay in Ninh Binh city or Tam Coc?
Choose by location and transport needs. A city hotel and a rural property create different sightseeing and airport journeys. Confirm the actual address.
Is Hang Mua compulsory?
No. The climb is optional and involves roughly 500 steps. Skip it if the exertion or conditions do not suit you.
Can I sightsee on day six?
Keep it as a transfer day until every road and airport leg is confirmed. Any remaining time is a bonus rather than a ticketed commitment.
Can I take a train instead of flying?
Compare the actual service, departure and arrival stations, sleeping arrangements and time cost for your dates. Rebuild the day and night allocation before replacing the flight.
When is Hoi An’s beach day reliable?
No date guarantees a beach day. Regional weather varies, and the tourism authority highlights storm and flooding risk in September–November. Keep an alternative.
Do I need an Ancient Town ticket?
Check the official heritage products for the interiors and sites you want to visit. The ticket is not a promise of unrestricted entry to every building.
Can I reverse the itinerary?
Yes, with Da Nang arrival and Hanoi departure. Recheck hotel nights, flight times and the final countryside-to-airport journey.
Will Amicly complete immigration checks for me?
Use it to organize readiness and itinerary questions, but confirm eligibility and permission through official authorities. A planner result does not replace entry approval.
Are photos evidence of today’s conditions?
No. Each caption identifies its source and date where known. Weather, access, restoration and crowds may differ.
