What are itineraries? An itinerary is a planned route for a journey. It covers where you go, in what order, when, and how you get between stops. "Itineraries" is the plural. A travel itinerary usually lists dates, overnight bases, transport legs, booked times and the main stops for each day.
Other words for itineraries: routes, trip plans, schedules, programmes, travel plans. The common abbreviation is itin. Pronunciation: US eye-TIN-uh-rair-ee; British eye-TIN-uh-ruh-ree, often said faster as eye-TIN-ruh-ree. The word comes from Latin iter, meaning "journey".
Find travel itineraries by how many days you have
Start with the time you actually have on the ground, not the dates on your ticket. A "7-day trip" with a late arrival and an early flight home gives you about five and a half usable days. The table counts nights, because hotel nights are what you pay for.
| Time on the ground | What fits | Itineraries to start from |
|---|---|---|
| 2–3 nights | One city, one base, no internal transfers | Porto, London, Rome, Barcelona, Lisbon, Kyoto, Dubai, Amsterdam, Bangkok |
| 3–7 nights (cruise) | Short Bahamas or Mexico sailings, or a one-week Inside Passage loop | Disney Cruise 2027, Alaska cruise itineraries |
| 6–7 nights | Two bases, one transfer day | Bali 7 days, a 7-night river cruise from the river cruise itineraries |
| 9–10 nights | Two or three bases, one big transfer | Japan 10 days, Vietnam 10 days, Costa Rica 10 days |
| 13–14 nights | Three or four bases, or one long road trip | Europe itineraries by train, New Zealand South Island, Australia 2 weeks |
A rule that holds across all of these: add one overnight base for every three to four nights, not more. Every time you change hotels you lose about half a day to checkout, transit, check-in and finding food. Ten nights across five cities sounds efficient. In practice you spend more of the trip in transit than at any single stop.
City itineraries (2–3 days)
City itineraries work best when each day stays in one cluster of neighbourhoods. Each guide below groups sights by location, flags which ones need timed tickets, and keeps one flexible block for weather or jet lag.
London itinerary
Westminster, the South Bank, the City and museums, all on foot and by Tube.
Rome itinerary
Colosseum, Vatican and centro storico, with ticket timing worked out.
Barcelona itinerary
Gaudí sites with entry slots, the Gothic Quarter and the beach.
Lisbon itinerary
Alfama, Belém and Baixa, with the hills accounted for.
Porto itinerary

Bangkok itinerary
Grand Palace, river temples, markets and the new 30-day entry rule.
Country and multi-city travel itineraries (7–14 days)
Longer travel itineraries depend on transfers. Each route below names the transfer days, estimates their door-to-door time, and says what to cut if you have fewer nights.
Japan itinerary
Tokyo and Kyoto, with Nara, Hakone or Nikko as day trips.
Vietnam itinerary
Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Hoi An, with one internal flight.

A South Island loop: Christchurch, Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound and the West Coast.
Australia itinerary
Sydney, the Reef and Uluru or Melbourne, with flight times and seasons.
Cruise itineraries
A cruise itinerary is fixed by the cruise line, so the planning work moves elsewhere. You choose the route, the season and the cabin, then plan port days that fit inside the "all aboard" time. Start with the general guide if you haven't picked a region yet.
Cruise itineraries: how to choose
Port-heavy or sea-day routes, round-trip or one-way, hurricane season, and how to read a cruise itinerary.
Alaska cruise itineraries
Inside Passage or Gulf of Alaska, the glacier choice, Juneau's daily cap, and the best routes.
Disney Cruise 2027 itineraries
Fall 2027 by ship and home port: New York, San Juan, Port Canaveral, Galveston, San Diego, Singapore.
River cruise itineraries
The Danube, Rhine, Douro, Nile and Mekong, with the best months and water-level risks for each.
Looking for the "Secret Itineraries" tour in Venice?
Some people search "itineraries" for something different. Itinerari Segreti (Secret Itineraries) is a guided tour of the Doge's Palace in Venice. It goes through the hidden offices, the torture room and the Piombi prison cells where Casanova was held. It has nothing to do with trip planning, but it is one of the most-searched itineraries in Italy. Our Doge's Palace Secret Itineraries tour guide covers the official price, English start times, the 25-person limit, and how it fits into a Venice day.
What every good travel itinerary includes
Whether you use one of our routes or write your own, check each day against this list. Most broken trips fail on the first three items, not on the sights.
- A sleeping location for every night. List it by town, not just by "Japan" or "the coast".
- Every transfer with a door-to-door time. Count the walk to the station, the security line and the wait at baggage claim, not just the time printed on the ticket.
- Fixed-time items first. Timed tickets, tours, restaurant bookings and ship "all aboard" times go in before anything flexible.
- Closing days. Many museums close on Mondays. Manuel Antonio National Park closes on Tuesdays. Anne Frank House tickets sell out weeks ahead. One wrong weekday breaks a whole day.
- A buffer block. Leave about two hours a day empty. If nothing goes wrong, it becomes the best café stop of the trip.
- Entry documents. Rules change every year: the EU Entry/Exit System has been live since April 2026, Thailand's visa-free stay dropped to 30 days in September 2026, and New Zealand charges an NZ$100 visitor levy. Each guide links the official source.
- Offline copies. Keep booking numbers, addresses in the local script, and a map that works without a signal.

Travel itineraries by traveller type
| Trip type | What to change in any itinerary |
|---|---|
| With young children | One major sight per day, a midday return to the hotel, and no transfer longer than 3 hours. Cruises and single-base city trips work best. |
| Limited mobility | Pick bases near step-free transit. Check tender ports on cruises (passengers go ashore by small boat). Skip the Secret Itineraries tour in Venice, which has steep, narrow stairs. |
| Bachelorette or group trips | Base everyone in one place, book the big dinner and the one paid activity first, and keep mornings open. |
| First international trip | Two bases at most, direct flights, and a city where you can use transit without a car. Lisbon, London and Tokyo/Kyoto suit this well. |
| Bespoke or luxury | Same structure, but spend the budget on fewer, better transfers: private drivers on Costa Rica's slow roads, a suite on a river cruise, or a guide for the Doge's Palace. |

Travel itineraries: common questions
What is a travel itinerary?
A travel itinerary is a day-by-day plan for a trip. It lists where you sleep each night, how and when you travel between places, booked times, and what you plan to see. It can be a rough outline or a timed schedule.
How many places should a 10-day itinerary include?
Two or three overnight bases for most travellers. Four is possible if the transfers are short trains. Every extra base costs about half a day.
Are these travel itineraries free?
Yes. Every itinerary on this site is free to read and copy. Amicly's planner can turn one into a version with your own dates and preferences.
What is the difference between an itinerary and a schedule?
A schedule lists times. An itinerary also covers the route: the order of places, the transport between them and where you stay. A cruise itinerary, for example, is the list of ports and sea days in sailing order.
What does "itineraries" mean in other languages?
Indonesian searchers often ask "itinerary adalah…?" ("an itinerary is…?"). The answer is a rencana perjalanan, a travel plan. In Italian, itinerari is the plural, which is why Venice's tour is called Itinerari Segreti. In Spanish it is itinerarios, and in French itinéraires.
Can AI make a good travel itinerary?
AI is fast at a first draft and weak at checking opening days, transfer times and booking windows. Treat the output as a draft and verify it. See our AI travel itinerary guide for a checking method.
How far ahead should I plan an itinerary?
For Alaska and Disney cruises, a year or more. Disney's fall 2027 sailings opened for booking in September 2026. For timed museums like Anne Frank House, about six weeks. For most city trips, two to three months is enough.
