Amsterdam Itinerary 3 Days: Museums, Canals, Jordaan and a Day Trip

Part of our travel itineraries library · Amicly Editorial Team · November 1, 2026

Amsterdam's centre is small enough to walk across in about 40 minutes. The hard part of a 3-day Amsterdam itinerary is the tickets, not the distances. The Anne Frank House sells only online and sells out. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum need timed slots. This plan groups each day by area and puts the timed entries first.

Before you go
  • Anne Frank House: tickets are sold only on the official website, released about six weeks ahead. Book the day they open.
  • Rijksmuseum: €27 for adults in 2026, free under 18. A timed slot is required even with a city card or Museumkaart. Open 9:00–17:00 daily.
  • Van Gogh Museum: timed online tickets only.
  • Getting around: trams and metro accept contactless bank cards (OVpay). Tap in and tap out.
  • Where to stay: the canal ring, the Jordaan or De Pijp. Amsterdam's tourist tax is among Europe's highest and is charged as a percentage of the room rate, so check whether a quoted price includes it.

Day 1: Museum Quarter and the canal ring

TimePlan
9:00Rijksmuseum, first slot of the day. Go straight to the Gallery of Honour for The Night Watch and the Vermeers before the crowds, then the rest. Allow 2.5–3 hours.
12:30Lunch near Museumplein, or picnic in the Vondelpark.
14:00Van Gogh Museum (about 2 hours). Or swap in the Stedelijk for modern art.
16:30Walk north along the Spiegelgracht and Prinsengracht into the Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes) for shops.
EveningA canal cruise at dusk. Smaller open boats beat the big glass-roofed ones.

Day 2: Anne Frank House, Jordaan and the old centre

TimePlan
MorningAnne Frank House at your booked time (about 1 hour; the steep stairs are original). Afterwards, sit quietly at the Westerkerk next door.
Late morningWalk the Jordaan: the Bloemgracht, Egelantiersgracht and the hidden courtyard gardens (hofjes) where residents allow quiet visits. On Saturdays, the Noordermarkt and Lindengracht markets.
AfternoonThe old centre: Dam Square, the Begijnhof and the Amsterdam Museum. Or the Rembrandt House Museum.
EveningDinner in the Jordaan or De Pijp. The Red Light District is part of the old centre. Residents ask visitors not to photograph the workers. Tours there are restricted.

Day 3: Choose a day trip, or Amsterdam Noord

  • Haarlem (about 15 minutes by train): Grote Markt, the Frans Hals Museum and fewer crowds. The easiest half-day.
  • Zaanse Schans (about 20 minutes by train to Zaandijk): working windmills. Go early, or skip it on summer weekends.
  • Keukenhof (mid-March to mid-May only): the tulip gardens. Book a combined bus and entry ticket.
  • Stay in the city: take the free ferry behind Centraal Station to Noord for the A'DAM Lookout, the NDSM wharf and street food. Or rent a bike for a few hours in the Vondelpark and along the Amstel.

Common mistakes

  1. Turning up without an Anne Frank House ticket. There's no door sale.
  2. Standing in bike lanes. They're usually red asphalt. Cyclists won't stop.
  3. Booking a hotel near Centraal Station for "convenience". It's the noisiest part of the city. Ten minutes' walk further gets you a quieter, nicer area.
  4. Trying to fit in the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House on the same day. It works on paper. In practice you're too tired to enjoy the third.

Amsterdam itinerary: FAQ

Is 3 days enough for Amsterdam?

Yes: two city days and a day trip. Two days covers the museums and canals if you're combining Amsterdam with Paris or a Rhine river cruise.

How far ahead should I book the Anne Frank House?

About six weeks, when tickets are released. Check the official site for the current release schedule. A small share may become available closer to the date, but don't count on it.

Is the I amsterdam City Card worth it?

It includes public transport, many museums and a canal cruise, but not the Anne Frank House. It pays off if you visit three or four included museums a day. With only the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, separate tickets are often cheaper.

What is the best month to visit Amsterdam?

April for tulips and King's Day (April 27), but it's busy. May–June and September are mild with long days. December has lights and fewer tourists, but short days.
