Best River Cruise Itineraries: Danube, Rhine, Douro, Nile and Mekong by Season

Part of our travel itineraries library · Cruise itineraries · Amicly Editorial Team · November 1, 2026

River cruise itineraries are shorter, slower and more town-centred than ocean cruises. Ships carry roughly 100–200 guests, dock in the middle of town, and often sail overnight, so you wake up somewhere new. The best river cruise itinerary depends on two things: the river, and the month. Water levels, heat and festival seasons change the trip more than the cruise line does.

Low water and high water: what actually happens

River ships have a shallow draft, but they can't sail when the river is too low, and they can't fit under bridges when it's too high. In a dry summer, the Rhine and the Danube can drop low enough that lines run "ship swaps": you get off one ship and board its sister ship on the other side of the shallow stretch. Or the line buses guests between towns while the ship waits. Spring floods cause the reverse. Ask the line how it handled the last disruption, and look at the insurance's cancellation terms. April–June and September–October sailings carry the lowest risk.

How to choose a river cruise line

If you want…Look at
Active excursions (bikes, hikes) includedAmaWaterways, Avalon, Tauck
Adults-only, culture-focused, consistent shipsViking (guests 18+)
All-inclusive drinks and tipsScenic, Uniworld, Tauck
Families with childrenSpecific family departures on AmaWaterways, Tauck and Adventures by Disney
Lower pricesEmerald, CroisiEurope, or shoulder-season departures

Compare cabins too. A "French balcony" is a floor-to-ceiling window that opens, with no space to sit outside. A full balcony costs more and matters most on scenic rivers like the Douro and the Wachau.

Combining a river cruise with land days

River cruise itineraries: FAQ

What is the best river cruise for first-timers?

A 7-night Danube cruise between Passau and Budapest. It's calm, with three capitals and the Wachau Valley, and every major line sails it.

When is the best time for a European river cruise?

May–June and September–October for weather and water levels. Late November to December for Christmas markets. Mid-April to early May for Dutch tulip itineraries that visit Keukenhof.

Do river cruises get seasick?

Rarely. Rivers have no swell. The motion is closer to a hotel than a ship. Locks can cause slight bumps at night.

Are AmaWaterways itineraries different from Viking?

They sail the same rivers but differ in style. AmaWaterways includes more active excursions, and many of its ships have twin balconies. Viking runs nearly identical ships for adults only. Compare the day-by-day ports, because one line may overnight in Vienna while the other doesn't.
