Doge's Palace Secret Itineraries Tour: Price, Times, Route and Is It Worth It?

Part of our travel itineraries library · Amicly Editorial Team · November 1, 2026

The Secret Itineraries tour (Itinerari Segreti) is a guided route through the parts of the Doge's Palace in Venice that the standard ticket doesn't show. It covers the narrow offices where the Republic's bureaucracy worked, the interrogation room, and the Piombi, the prison cells under the lead roof that Giacomo Casanova escaped from in 1756. It's the best-value upgrade in Venice if you're curious about how the Republic actually ran. It's a poor choice if you have mobility problems or claustrophobia.

What you see on the Secret Itineraries tour

The order varies a little. The route climbs from the administrative mezzanine levels to the roof:

  1. The Ducal Chancellery and the offices of the notaries, small wood-panelled rooms where the paperwork of the Venetian state was produced and stored.
  2. The Torture Chamber (Camera del Tormento), where suspects were interrogated. The rope and pulley method is explained.
  3. The Piombi, the prison cells under the lead-sheathed roof: freezing in winter and stifling in summer. The guide tells the story of Casanova's 1756 escape through the roof.
  4. The attic timber roof structure, built with shipbuilding techniques from the Arsenale.
  5. The Hall of the Three Heads and the Inquisitors' rooms, linked to the Council of Ten, Venice's security council. They connect through a hidden door into the public halls you'll see afterwards.

Is the Secret Itineraries tour worth it?

Worth it if…Skip it if…

You're travelling with older kids or teens (6+). The prison and escape stories hold attention. You're with a child under 6, who won't be admitted

How to fit it into a Venice itinerary

Best slot: the 10:00 English tour. You're done at about 11:15, then you have the main palace (the Hall of the Great Council, the Bridge of Sighs and the "new" prisons) at your own pace before the noon crowds. That takes another 1.5–2 hours. Arrive 15–20 minutes early at the ticket desk by the Porta del Frumento entrance on the waterfront side.

Venice access fee: do you need to pay it?

In 2026 Venice charges day visitors an access fee on set calendar days, between 8:30 and 16:00. It's €5 if you pay by the fourth day before your visit, and €10 after that. If you sleep in Venice you're exempt, but you still register for an exemption code. The fee doesn't apply on the lagoon islands (Murano, Burano, Lido). Check the official calendar at cda.ve.it before a day trip. The fee is separate from your palace ticket.

Private vs official group tours

The official group tour is the cheapest way in. Private and small-group operators run "VIP" or after-hours versions with a smaller group and sometimes extra rooms, at several times the price. They're worth it for a family that wants a guide to themselves. They're not needed for most travellers.
